Some might say that I’m “as mad as a March hare” when it comes to the style remixing plan I’m sharing today. That phrase is said to have its origins in the observed antics of the European hare during its March breeding season. Nowadays, it’s used to refer to any who behaves in the excitable and unpredictable manner of a March hare.

I’m excited, to be sure, but hardly crazed out of my mind. Nor is the style remixing plan I have up my sleeve (yes, pun intended) a novel one. In fact, the idea for this post comes from my recollection of a monthly feature that used to be published in one of my favorite long-since-gone fashion magazines. Unfortunately, I cannot recall if it was Lucky or Glamour or perhaps another that is no longer in circulation.

The monthly feature I’m referring to would show a selection of garments/accessories, usually 5 or so, that had been deemed key pieces to buy/wear that month. These pieces didn’t necessarily all work with each other nor were they specifically foundational key pieces for a capsule. They tended towards having trending and/or unique details. The articles would also show 5 or so different ways to wear each of the pieces and essentially offer up nearly a month’s worth of looks.

So with that back story covered, I’ll now get to the details of my “mad as a March hare” style remixing plan. At the start of each month, I will share an outfit made up of the selected 5 pieces that I will wear at least 4 more times that month. The pieces may be worn in tandem with others from the collection or on their own. A few of the pieces could get worn more than 4 times but that would be the minimum. Some of those looks will be outfits worn in subsequent posts during the month. After all, don’t we all find ourselves wearing a favorite over and over again?

As I start out with this plan, my intention is to create monthly collections where at least 4 of the pieces can be combined into a cohesive outfit. The basic formula for the collections would be a top, a bottom (e.g. pants, skirt, shorts), footwear, an outer layer (e.g. jacket, sweater, blazer), and a wildcard. It’s fairly easy to put together a reasonable outfit with the first four items. I added the wildcard for flexibility in the event I’ve opted to double on any of the first four (e.g. two jackets, pants and a skirt) or I decide to add an accessory to the style remix plan.

Let’s get to the details of the collection for the March style remix. Anticipating that the weather will still be on the chilly side for most of the month, I opted for a wool-blend blazer as my outer layer. And since blazers are enjoying a moment trend-wise, I was pleased to have come across this one with its southwest motif recently on Poshmark. My top is a new acquisition made a couple of weeks ago during a trip to the mall. It has stripes of metallic thread that don’t show well in these photos and it comes in black as well as beige.

The jeans are a straight-leg style by Loft that I got at a thrift store sometime in the last couple of years. They’re a tad too long for me if I’m not wearing a heel so I often just turn the cuff up as you see in these photos. My Converse lugged sole sneakers are the real-deal when it comes to comfort. I bought them, along with the black platform ones seen in How To Live Your Best Life, late last summer and their first wearing was for these photos. I plan to get a lot of use out of them as I transition out of my boots this month.

The wildcard piece in this month’s collection is the cardigan that I’ve got layered between my blazer and top. It’s an old favorite (date on label is Q1 13) and the brand is Merona. I’ve got quite a collection of cardigans from this brand and others that I’ve accumulated over the years. This beauty made its first appearance on the blog back in April 2016 (see Florals On Target) where I confessed my dual sartorial obsession with florals and cardigans. It also appeared in two Last Week, This Week posts, November 2018 and March 2019.

Towards the end of the month, there will be a wrap-up post that will showcase how I wore each of the pieces in accordance with the plan. I’ll be throwing in a few of “my favorite” new finds that I made that month into that wrap-up post as well. Those finds could be a recipe, a life hack, a social media post, or anything else that simply caught my attention and I felt was worthy of passing along. As Spring approaches, do you have any plans for a style remix?

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  1. I love this idea, Rena, and can’t wait to see it in action! As I usually wear lots of things on repeat (but don’t necessarily share them on the blog), it will be good to see how you do it! Michelle and I have started Traffic Jam Weekend back up so I hope you’ll come over and link up!

Good luck with your style goals and challenge! I think it’s good to be creative and try to pick a few key pieces we can wear multiple ways – I always like it when I go through my outfit photos for my 30 wears posts and see I’ve been really creative with the ways I’ve worn things over time!

Thanks for joining the Weekday Wear Link up 🙂
