The end of Summer is nigh and the first signs of Fall have likely not escaped your notice. You know, ones like pumpkin spice everything, Halloween candy displays in the market, and of course, the Christmas aisles in Costco.

And while temperatures are still in the realm of toasty in most regions of the northern hemisphere, many of us are already scoping out the styles and trends on the horizon for Fall. From my reading of online articles and scrolling various retailers’ websites, I’ve noticed a few that I really like and some that I take a hard pass on. It goes without saying that sustainable and ethical fashion will remain a significant trend in the upcoming season and beyond. Consideration for clothing made from eco-friendly materials, vintage or second-hand pieces, and by brands that prioritize ethical production practices will not lead you astray.

Before we dive deeper into the subject, allow me to reintroduce my ‘style remix’ concept. Starting back in early Spring with Style Remix: Mad As A March Hare, I shared a bit of background as to the origins of this post format. TL;DR? At the beginning of each month, I’m sharing the five pieces I’ve selected for that month’s style remix collection. Ideally, at least four of the pieces could be combined into a cohesive outfit. Typically, the basic formula for the collections would be a top, a bottom (e.g. pants, skirt, shorts), footwear, and an outer layer (e.g. jacket, sweater, blazer) which make up the core four pieces. The 5th piece would be a wildcard item that could either also be worn with the other four (e.g. a coat, vest, or accessory) or in substitution (i.e. a dress or a skirt or a duplicate item).

Initially, my goal had been to wear each piece at least four times over the course of said month with photographic evidence to be provided in a post at the end of the month. I did this challenge for 3 months and found those goals to be difficult to achieve. This time around I’m setting the goal at two additional OOTDs for each piece in the collection. If any are worn additional times, then photos of those OOTDs will also be included in the month-end report. The pieces could be worn in tandem with others from the collection or on their own with other items in my wardrobe as most people would do. Some of these outfits will be the featured looks worn in subsequent posts during the month or they might only appear in the results post.
As for the top Fall trends, according to those in the know like InStyle, ELLE, and GLAMOUR, the color red appears to be front and center at the top of the list. Bold and bright, head-to-toe. While that kind of power dressing isn’t quite my cup of tea anymore, that won’t stop me from adding a pop of it in with an accessory or two. Peplums are mentioned in two of the articles but I’m still in recovery from Prairiecore so I think I’ll maintain a wait-and-see stance on that. However, I’m taking a hard pass for off/bare shoulders as well as anything overly sheer.

Without closer scrutiny, the items I selected for the Fall In Line style remix collection may look somewhat commonplace. Certainly, they aren’t high fashion or couture. They represent what’s accessible, wearable, and affordable while still being modern, versatile, and up-to-date. My key pieces for this month’s collection are wide-leg jeans, a pin-striped button-up, an oversized blazer, a faux leather vest, and textile booties.

One trend that I’m pretty crazy about lately is wide-leg jeans. In the past year or so, I’ve been leaning away from skinny jeans and favoring straight-leg styles. The few attempts I’d made at finding a pair of wide-leg ones had been unsuccessful until about two months ago. That was when Paula over at Dimples On My What published her 4 OF THE BEST PLUS-SIZE WIDE-LEG JEANS FOR BIG THIGHS post.

While I don’t quite wear plus sizes, my body shape is somewhat similar to Paula’s so I read her review with earnest interest. And dang if she wasn’t spot on about her assessment of High-Waisted Wow Wide-Leg Jeans available at one of my favorite retailers. There are 5 color choices as well as a size range of 0 to 30 with an option for short, regular, or long length for that entire range.

The description “high-waisted” might be off-putting for those of you who are height-challenged as I am but I found the waist on these jeans to hit just right. The weight of the denim makes it sturdy enough for the jeans to retain their shape but not too heavy to be uncomfortable in waning days of Summer. In fact, I wore these beauties one evening in late July in Las Vegas when even the nighttime temps hovered close to 100°. I think they’re so great that I also got them in black and I’m considering getting the lighter shade as well.

Another of the current trends that I’m keen on is the looser-fit and longer-length blazer. As a busty gal with narrow shoulders and wide hips, it’s been a challenge to find any that fit decently. Some have been way too boxy, or way too long, or simply way too poorly made. Never Say Die has always been my motto when it comes to shopping so I persevered and came across this option recently at another of my favorite retailers. Add to cart! The fit and finish are much better than I had hoped for.
I’ve added yet another striped button-up shirt to my wardrobe because who couldn’t use one more. My booties (also new) have a textile exterior and look like a sweater. By this point, it probably hasn’t escaped your notice that although I’ve listed a faux leather vest as being part of the collection, said vest doesn’t appear in these photos. It wasn’t until I started to select and edit the images for this post that I realized that I’d forgotten to wear the vest. With not enough time to reshoot, I decided to go with the photos at hand and make sure to provide the details of the vest in the wrap-up post.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. Today’s featured post from the last link-up, WHAT I WORE ON THE PLANE TO ITALY, was contributed by Rosemary over at Distinctly Southern Style. I always find helpful ideas and tips about traveling in posts like Rosemary’s.

As I mentioned earlier, towards the end of the month, there will be a wrap-up post that will showcase how I wore each of the pieces in the collection during the month. I’ll also be throwing in a few of “my favorite” new finds that I’d recently come across into that post. Those finds might be a recipe, a life hack, a social media post, or anything else that simply caught my attention and I felt was worthy of passing along. Now that we’re in the transition from Summer to Fall, what autumnal trends are you most keen about? Do you have any plans for a style remix?

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  1. Oh, I love those jeans and have a couple pairs of them, too! I don’t know why the high waisted jeans work on my short waisted body, but they do! I have also worn them out and about in our heat and humidity and found them not near as stifling as other jeans. I just don’t have any luck with blazers so I don’t even try anymore. But, red…hmm…not really my jam, but, like you, I probably have something I can pop into an outfit. And, a hard pass to sheer, off the shoulder, and an even harder pass to a peplum!! Thanks so much for the link party!

    • Renn,
Your jeans and blazer look is one of my favorite outfit combinations.

Thanks for the feature and for hosting the party.🙏

      Have a marvelous week!

  2. Ooh Rena, I love these wide legged jeans on you! This is a really cool outfit and I am sure you will create lots of different looks with these pieces. I am tempted to shop for some wide leg denim now except I haven’t been wearing jeans much lately and I have too many pairs already! Fun post, my friend. Have a fabulous week!

  3. Hi Rena! I don’t know if my first comment posted. My computer went all wonky when I hit post comment. Haha. I love these wide legged jeans on you. This outfit is really cute and I am sure you will be able to create lots of fun looks with these pieces. I love wide legged denim but haven’t been wearing much denim these days at all. Thanks for the link party, my friend. Have a wonderful day!

  4. That is a great wide leg fit on you! I’ve been trying to find a flattering denim one on me but haven’t been successful yet. Love them paired with a blazer!

  5. Great idea for your remix, it’s so easy to get complacent with teaming pieces together! I’ve just managed to get some wide leg high waist jeans too, not often available, inclined to think they are a little high but probably need to get used to them.

  6. This outfit looks great on you, so classic and stylish for fall! We are experiencing a heat wave in Maryland, with temperatures in the 90’s all week. but when it cools down, I love the wide leg jeans and vest trend. And the color red is always a favorite with me. Thanks for the inspiration and enjoy your week!

  7. All your pieces sound like such classics! I love those wide leg jeans; a trend I haven’t fully embraced yet but I am hopeful to find a pair I like.

  8. I just want you to know that when you endorsed my post on decluttering my clothes closet a couple of months ago, that gave me a major boost on YouTube. (That post had a YouTube video in it). I went from 40 followers to 168, and the video on that post that you mentioned on your blog got more views than anything I have ever made. I just wanted to tell you thank you for your hand in that.

It’s nice to think about the new seasons styles, I’m itching to get wearing mine, but we’re having a heatwave here in the UK … phew! Jacqui x

  10. I can’t get enough of wide leg jeans, I’m always on the look out for the perfect pair. I have a couple from H&M that are ok, but not perfect. I like a high waist too, because they can be quite flattering when wearing shorter tops.

  11. I am excited about red, I do love the color. It’s funny, I just bought a pair of the wow wide leg jeans and am awaiting them in the mail. I have a lighter pair of wide leg, but wanted a dark wash for Fall. Love this classic look! I certainly try to ask myself how many times can I wear each piece.

  12. Thanks for sharing this classic look on the Ageless Style link up. I often get caught up in ruffles, lace, frills and forget how put together a blazer, blouse and jeans can look. Going to try it this weekend. Hope I can create a look as good as you do in yours.
