Maxi skirts, as well as dresses, are having a moment in the sun this year and I for one, couldn’t happier. Their longer length can create a leaner silhouette and provide a comfortable warm-weather option for those that prefer not to wear shorts.

Which is why I think that these skirts can add maximum impact (see what I did there?) to an outfit. Like this tie-dyed one I found last week at a local thrift store. Or course the pattern appealed to my love of boho and the light cotton weave would be a breeze to wear in the months ahead. The bias-cut fabric seems to float gently over my curves and I hardly even feel the elastic waistband. I was a little apprehensive about the length when I bought it (no try-on room). However, I figured that if ultimately I didn’t like how it looked on me then I could list the skirt on Poshmark. Not doing that, it’s a keeper.

Wondering about the sweater in early June? Well, the weather in my area along the coast in Southern California can be a little chilly if the cloud cover lingers into the afternoon. I could have easily grabbed one of my denim jackets as a topper but I quite like the monochromatic scheme in this look.

In my limited years of thrift store shopping, I’ve taken notice of what fads women likely went overboard on and then purged from their wardrobes. It was about four years ago when maxi skirts in knit jersey-type fabrics became quite popular. And if I recall correctly, stripes were the predominant pattern of these skirts. I even had a couple (see below). Then about a year later I began to see a lot of them on the racks in thrift stores. There’s still no shortage of them.

Back to the topic of my new-to-me maxi skirt. Mind you, it’s not like I don’t already have a tie-dyed maxi skirt or two in my closet. As evidenced by the skirts in the following photos which were also thrift store finds. I justified buying the one featured in today’s post because it’s green and I don’t have a green one. I do have a couple of maxi skirts in camo-type patterns (also thrifted) but they are both a very full a-line style which isn’t as flattering on me as the skirt in today’s look. The Husband will be thrilled to hear that I will be getting rid of those other skirts.

Without the sweater, my lacey vest can be seen better. I’ve had it for about 5 years (I do like how 🎯 puts dating on their labels) and I think it compliments the boho vibe of the skirt. It also serves as an additional completer piece and helps to camouflage/minimize any lumps, bumps, and rolls. A bronze belt, a pair of flatbed sandals, and a layering of beaded necklaces complete the look.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. My featured blogger from last week is Mica, a 20-something Aussie and mother of two who strives to inspire the readers of her blog, Away From The Blue, to wear the items they have already in their wardrobes and create new outfits with them.

Have I made my case for maxi skirts? I’m interested in hearing about where your focus is these days, style-wise. Are you staying only with what’s current or do you look at what has worked in the past? What details are staples in your wardrobe? And now that Summer is only a few short weeks away, how have your fashion choices changed since last year?

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  1. Timely post! Your tie dye maxi is pretty timeless (love it)-tie dye always seems to have it’s day over and over. I have a couple of maxi skirts in the closet and just made a new one to add to the crew so I’m with you all the way!

Terri, tie-dye is such a fun pattern and I don’t care if it’s in or out of style … I’ll wear it anyway.

  2. Lucy Bertoldi

You certainly have made your case with me!! I’m all for maxis- especially dresses! The easiest thing to pull from my closet and it’s always comfy, looks just the way I want it and it’s a passe-partout! Your tie-dye is so good for styling up with anything- looking great!

    • I have a penchant for maxi dresses and love wearing them because it means I do not need to fake tan. Love your tie dye skirt.

    • Rena

YES! That’s the answer I like to hear. Thank you, Lucy.

  3. You look great in these long skirts. They make you look tall. It’s just that any horizontal line creates a break and the result is that the vertical line is interrupted. Unfortunately, maxi dresses and skirts are unpractical when it rains. Add snow in winter, when you live in a cold winter climate region. In a maxi dress/skirt, one would become a snow plow in an unplowed parking lot.

Nicole, I can totally understand how the weather you get in Alaska could make wearing maxi-length skirts and dresses difficult. Practicality was one of the reasons why hem lengths rose after the Victorian period.

Aw, Rena, you are a beautiful bohemian goddess! What a gorgeous skirt and fabulous outfit. I love the lacy vest and the long cardigan. So, so pretty! I definitely have an adequate collection of jersey knit maxi skirts and most of them are striped! Haha. I’ve kept mine because I do wear them sometimes on really hot days.

Shelbee, you’re going to make me blush. Thank you for the outfit love and for sharing with me a fondness for all things maxi skirts.

  5. Love the boho vibes in your new maxi skirt outfit! I have two knit maxi skirts (both thrifted)–one black asymmetric hem one that I like to wear and one black-and-grey stripes that is much harder to style but is good for a summer day when I haven’t shaved my legs (tell me I’m not the only one, haha).

    • Rena

Sally, you’re not the only one to chose an outfit based on whether or not one’s legs are ready for public viewing. I applaud those that don’t care either way. Fortunately, with age, the hair on my legs has thinned considerably so it’s not nearly as noticeable as it once was.

    • Rena

Thank you, Jill. I was pretty pleased with how this outfit turned out.

  6. I’m loving your new to you tie-dye maxi! (And the other skirts you shared in this post too,) I’m a big fan of both midi and maxi skirts and dresses because I’m long past being comfortable in shorts. (I’ve reached the point where I have my grandmother’s legs. How did that happen? 😄) And that vest is gorgeous! I love this outfit, Rena.

Michelle, thanks for letting me know that you like this look and share in my fondness for longer-length hemlines. I much prefer them to shorts as well.

  7. isthismutton

Great boho vibes in your maxi. The lacey top adds a further dimension without adding heat or bulk.

    • Rena

Gail, layers without too much extra warmth or bulk are a necessity in Spring and Summer.

  8. I never wore maxi skirts and for some reason I’m loving them this season! Yours looks fabulous as I love black! Have a great Sunday!

    • Rena

Nancy, as you’ve learned it’s good to keep an open mind when it comes to fashion.

  9. I rarely style my outfits based on what’s current or fashionable right now. I just wear whatever takes my fancy! I must say, I’m totally into your outfit today, Rena. The skirt is an absolute gem of a find! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m super envious of your thrift stores over there in the US!! I also love the lace vest — it’s perfect! And the sandals too. They’re my favourite kind of summer sandals. I need to find myself a new pair because my current ones are so worn out I just wear them to walk the dog!
Hope you’re having a fabulous Sunday!
    Hugs
    Suzy xx

Suzy, I’m glad you like the look. My sandals are a favorite, so much so that I have them in four different colors because they’re so cute and comfortable.

I’ve gotten rid of all but one of my striped maxis. This year I picked up an orange tiered maxi skirt and have worn it a couple times. I do love how they are breezy in the summer. I actually wore a tie dye one yesterday and will be posting it on Insta in a minute. It was a hand me down for the neighbor. Love the print of this one: definitely a winner!

Mireille, I’m glad you like the look. And talk about great minds thinking alike, I also bought an orange tiered skirt recently (thrift store find, of course) that I’ve not yet shared online.

    • Rena

Lauren, they can be super versatile along with being so comfortable and easy to wear.

  11. I’m a huge fan of maxi skirts – I love your wonderful collection here, Rena! I have certain requirements in them: must be an interesting pattern or a really nice fabric/colour. Pockets are almost always a deal-breaker for me, too. I don’t give a flying fork if they are in style or not – to me, they are endlessly elegant. Rock on!

Thank you so much for the link-up! I’ve joined with one long skirt (a Vivienne Westwood gem I found last week) and some Nautical Pants!

    • Rena

Carrie, the IG post I did with that skirt a year ago got a lot of likes so there are a lot of other people who share your fondness for it.

  12. You know I love a good maxi skirt! They are a mum staple for me – something that’s got more coverage than shorts but as you pointed out are a great warm weather option as you don’t overheat in them! I am loving the options at opshops too – although being petite most of the ones I thrift either need altered to be shorter, or were midi skits to begin with, haha!

Thanks so much for the link up and the feature too! And thank you for joining the #WeekdayWear Link Up! Hope you are having a lovely weekend 🙂

    • Rena

Mica, I knew that you would like the look. I’ve always had a fondness for longer skirts, much to my mother’s dismay.

  13. I love long floaty skirts. Yours are beautiful 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up to The Weekend Link Up. I hope you can join us again tomorrow for Creative Mondays #TheWeekendLinkUp

    • Rena

Claire, I’m glad you like the look. The mix of femininity and sensibility that longer skirts bring to an outfit is what draws me to them.
