While an island getaway to a tropical locale may not yet be in the cards just yet, it can inspire an outfit. Palm trees swaying in a gentle breeze was the image this skirt brought to mind when I spied on the sale rack at a resale store. It was one of the secondhand finds shared in Thrift Store Finds And OOTDs: February 2021.

I’m going to dive into the details right away. This skirt is a wrap-around one and I really appreciate that it has a nearly full side-to-side overlap across the front. Even with a strong breeze, I’m not at risk for overexposure. Since it’s been a while since I last had a wrap-around skirt, it took me a few minutes to figure out how the ties were supposed to fit into the slit in the waistband and the loops (see photo on left below). The only fasteners are just those ties, done up in a tight bow. The skirt also has side-seam pockets which will likely get little use but it’s a detail that just makes any garment a bit more special.

Besides a bold colorful floral print, nothing adds a tropical flair to a look like a straw tote, even one with more diminutive dimensions. Typically, I wear mine as a crossbody but it easily converts to shoulder or take the straps off if you just want to carry the purse by the handles. I bought this one about two years ago but I recently saw a similar one by the same brand if you’re thinking that a bag like this would be great for your Spring/Summer looks.

The back of my white lacy top is a bit too sheer for me to wear without another layer. My preference is to add a light outer layer as opposed to wearing a camisole underneath. I could easily have opted for denim but instead decided to go with my utility jacket. I’ve had this one for several years and wore it often to work as a completer piece. It also “works” just as well for more casual looks, as shown in Would You, Could You? Sequins, A Utility Jacket, And Pops Of Red.

Rounding out my tropical inspired outfit are my newish yellow cork-wedge sandals that have quickly become a favorite. They made their first appearance in Thrift Store Finds & OOTDs: March 2021 and then again in Fresh Focus: Tie-Dye. The only thing I’m missing is a fruity beverage served up in a hollowed-out coconut and topped with a paper umbrella.

A straw tote for sure with these lovely florals! I also love that you chose the utility jacket over denim- more original! Those yellow sandals are so cute too! You look great my friend:) Have a great weekend xx

    • Lucy, thank you and I’m so glad you like the look.

  2. A wrap around skirt. The second thing I every made was a wrap-around skirt. It was 7th grade Home Economics and I still have it, But, after making that one, all those decades ago, I’ve never worn one. But, now I want one. And love your delicate, almost Victorian looking blouse. You always put together such fun things.

    • Terri, wearing the wrap-around skirt does take me back to my younger days. I’m glad you like the look.

Love the tropical print. Very summery. I’ve been trying on a few things for spring and summer but not many purchases yet. It’s still very cold so puts you off! Have a good weekend

    • Gail, tropical prints are indeed summery as well as fun to wear.

  4. Awww…, what a sweet shout-out! Thank you for the feature.

I’m ready to get away to that tropical island with you. I love your skirt. What a great find! Your entire outfit just yells “vacation!” And “let’s do something fun!”

As for my staples…, bright, happy jewel tones for the most part. I’ve never cared about the “latest trend” unless I just happen to like it. And if so, I’ll keep wearing it long after it’s no longer trending.

    • Michelle, I too am ready for traveling and doing something fun.

    • I cannot wait to get back shopping as at the moment I am shopping my wardrobe. I would love a new dress and some new tops for the summer. It will be outdoor social events so I need plenty of layering in Ireland.

      • Hilda, it sounds like you’ve got a good list of wants. I hope that you’re able to get out for shopping soon.

  5. I love wrapped dresses and skirts, especially if they have pockets. It’s a gorgeous print. And yes, that beverage sounds good to me!

Such a pretty skirt, Rena! And I really like the contrast of the utility jacket with the super feminine vibe of the skirt. I have trouble with wrap skirts for some reason. I can never get the ties correct either and the few wrap style skirts I do have are in a bin somewhere, sort of sitting in purgatory. I like them too much to get rid of them but can’t figure out to make them work on my body! But you have inspired me to try again!

    • Shelbee, I do hope that you give them another try (and of course, write a blog post about the experience).

    • Jodie, “yellow shoes rule” could be your new motto. Thanks for the outfit love.

  7. that is a beautiful skirt, what a great find for spring and summer! the yellow shoes and the olive jacket are really nice colours with it 🙂

Thanks for the link up 🙂

Hope that you had a good weekend 🙂 It’s a relaxing long weekend for us!

    • Thank you, Mica. I’m glad that you like the outfit as much as I do.

    • Mireille, yellow shoes are an easy way to elevate a look, don’t you think?

  8. I love this tropical look! What a great find. I haven’t owned a wrap skirt before but I’ve tried one or two on… glad to hear this one has a lot of fabric to wrap around! That’s what discouraged me from the ones I’ve tried – too much risk of flashing. The yellow shoes are a great pop of color and I love your bag, too! Thanks for joining my Thursday linkup.

Grace, the skirt was a wonderful find. I almost passed on it because it’s a size larger than I wear but that just helps with added coverage with the wrap over.
