Statement pants are a staple that every fashionista needs! An eye-catching essential that completely transforms the outfit and makes it as unique as the person wearing them.

When making a fashion statement, you create an impression that communicates an idea or mood without using words. It may be that you want to show people what you think or believe by dressing in a particular way. In the act of making a statement, you might reach deep within to do something in a dramatic fashion such that it expresses your point of view.

The selected theme for this edition of the Magnificent 8 Collaboration is statement pants, or as Shelbee recently put it, fancy pants. When the theme was first proposed, my thoughts indeed went to “fancy” such as sequins (which I don’t have) or a bold floral (which I do have). I considered pants in a bright color like orange, also someone I didn’t have at the time. Like anyone in need of a garment they don’t yet have, I went on the hunt. Mostly, I searched on Poshmark and poked around in a few thrift stores, and of course I came up short. Then an idea came to me.

Perhaps I might go with a very literal spin of the theme? Reflecting back on my “we were real” statement shirt that I wore in A Woman I Know: Me, I thought it might be cool to wear pants that had a written statement on them. But what statement would I be comfortable wearing?

It was when I was rooting around in my collection of bracelets that I had an “a-ha” moment. The bracelet in question is a thin band to which one adds letters to spell out a name or phrase. Mine currently displays @finewhatev which is my Instagram handle minus the dot. This led me to the idea of creating my own statement pants that express a point of view near and dear to me.

it’s all FINE WHATEVER tickles the fancy

Butt, of course, that’s not all.

You should always leave them with a lasting impression, don’t you think?

The drawing of me that appears on my right leg was created by Anne M Bray, a talented artist with the blog Spy Girl. Anne did drawings like the one of me for all of the FierceCon 2019 attendees. She looked on each of the womens’ Instagram accounts and/or blogs for an inspiration image to base her drawing on. It was the photo of me wearing a newly acquired statement coat from several months earlier that caught her eye. I was so delighted with the sketch that it’s the image on my business cards and I used the same colors when I updated the appearance of my blog.

The jeans are an old favorite pair that were destined for an as yet undetermined upcycle project. They are the same ones I’m wearing in the inspiration photo. I’ve rather liked the look of jeans with added patches of printed fabrics and/or various other shades of denim. Once I’d decided to create my own statement pants based on the name of this blog, my color options were pre-determined. I figured that jeans would be a good candidate for the project and why not use that one favorite pair. Fortunately, I was able to execute my DIY project in just a few hours’ time and without much fuss.

Let’s move onto the Magnificent 8 Collaboration. This is its 12th edition. The previous ones were; Life’s A Beach, Distressed, Workout Wear, Spring Pattern Mixing, White Dress, Animal Print, Family Heirloom, Garden Party, Hello, Yellow!, Pearls, and most recently Outside The Box.  Have you visited any of the other Magnificent 8 gals yet and seen their spins on the theme of Statement Pants? In case you haven’t, let me show you the way.

The Magnificent 8 is a collaboration among 8 stylish women, each in a different age bracket, ranging from early 20’s to early 80’s. The intent of the collaboration is to show that there are no age restrictions on style. So wear what you want, when you want, add a smile, and strut your style with confidence. And be sure to check out the other 7 amazing gals! We are sharing these posts on a quarterly basis … be on the lookout in July for the next post in this series.

    • Jodie, I’m not sure if it was a stroke of genius or huge fail but it was a fun project.

Rena, you are a creative genius! These jeans are amazing! And I love that you personalized them with your Anne sketch and your blog name. How fun is that! Okay, now I need a pair of Shelbee on the Edge fancy pants! I love the orange and white tie dye top paired with them, too. Gah! So good!

    • Aw shucks, Shelbee. Thank you for the love. And yes, you do need a pair of Shelbee On The Edge pants.

    • Thank you, Mireille. I’m kind of proud of how they turned out.

    • Jacqui, I’m so pleased that you like the look and my self-made statement pants.

  4. Rena, I LOVE your custom jeans – now those are fancy pants! Your Anne portrait is amazing! I have two from her, both from years ago (one with short blonde hair, and one with bright purple hair) – she is so talented, and how cool that you met her in 2019. She is so awesome.

    • Sheila, I actually first met Anne in 2017 when she did her 52 Muses art show in LA. I was also a muse (pink flamingo top) and I live in the general area. She is a lovely person besides being a talented artist.

    • Thank you, Maureen, for the lovely compliments. I’m glad that you like the outfit.
