The standard Buffalo Plaid (or check) is a pattern of large blocks formed by the intersection of two different color yarns, typically red and black. It’s origins stem from the classic Rob Roy Tartan.

You’ll find this article on Buffalo Plaid full of information about when and how this iconic design became integrated into the history of the American West. While little else seems as cozy as a flannel shirt or sherpa lined slippers sporting the traditional version of this plaid, I’ve opted to put my Fresh Focus on an alternative color combination.

While not flannel, this dress seemed like a great option for Fall when I bought it a year ago because of the layering opportunities I envisioned for it. Oddly though, I have no photos from any previous wearings. I distinctly recall an occasion from last October when I wore it belted with leggings and my olive utility jacket.

As I said, layering options abound. Such is the versatility of a front-button dress. Imagine it with black jeans and a chunky cardigan. Or worn with a longer tulle skirt and a sweet bolero jacket. One might even pop it over another front-button dress and complete the look tall boots.

“These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you”

Boy, if these beauties don’t just steal the show. Better yet, they were a thrift store find. I’ve had a difficult time figuring out how to work them into outfits. Under longer hemlines, it can look like I’m wearing pants. It seems that they work better when they can be seen in all of their glory.

I’ve got a quick story to share before I finish this post. No one pre-reads or proofs my blog posts before they are published. I select and edit the images. The Husband (also my photographer) doesn’t follow my blog via email or social media (he says that he doesn’t need to since he lives it, LOL). So the only way he would know when a post had published was if I told him. Over time, it’s worked out that I will send him a text with the link to a post once it has published which he will then read at his leisure.

Usually, The Husband will make a comment or two either about the photos I selected and/or the topic of the post. Sometimes not. During dinner this past Tuesday, he hadn’t yet commented on In Pursuit Of A Perfect Wardrobe: 7 Pitfalls To Avoid so I asked if he had read it yet. He said that he didn’t need to because he already had the perfect wardrobe which according to him means that it fits into one drawer. As they say, opposites attract.

It just goes to show that you have to know your audience. So what say you, how are you feeling about buffalo plaid? And what about layering a dress over another dress?

Be well and let’s stay in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  1. I love your layering in this outfit! It’s so fun and cute! Those boots are seriously amazing on you too!

  2. Rena, this Buffalo plaid dress is so freaking cool. And I love how you layered it over a denim dress. You are so creative with your style! And yes, those boots are amazing! I have been on a major thrifting kick lately. I think everyone did clean out their closets during lockdown and now everything is in the thrift shops! And that story about your husband just totally cracked me up! My husband doesn’t read my blog much either for quite the same reason…he lives it! Great post!
