What better motif to feature this month as summer is getting ready to heat up than stars and stripes? And from this American’s perspective, no color combination seems more connected to summer than red, white, and blue. How could it not when the season is bookended by two flag-flying holidays with another that pops up midway through? A little (or a lot) RWB makes for a festive outfit and no one would question your patriotism if your ensemble also included a few stars and stripes. And maybe toss in a bit a tie-dye for an extra kick.

The temps were still hovering in the high 60s when these photos were taken a couple of weeks ago. This week, the weather will be 10 to 15 degrees warmer during the day but still cool at night in my neck of the woods. A lightweight sweater worn with a midi-length skirt and bare legs strikes a good balance of coverage without heaviness.

Starting at the top, my sweater was a retail purchase bought last year. I’ll admit that eye-catching stars, bold horizontal stripes, and a rounded neckline might not be the most flattering details for my figure. But sometimes, you just need to go with the whimsy. A Y-necklace helps to create an elongating deep V and different patterns on the sleeves help to keep the eye moving.  A temporary skrewching (that’s what I call it) of the bottom near my left hip was achieved with a safety pin which breaks the line that would otherwise be cutting me in half.

My skirt is a thrift store find. It features 12 pairs of hidden ties that allow me to switch up the look. For example, in these photos, I tied a few of the ones in the front for a high-low effect. This skirt is the same as another secondhand find I shared in Spring Pattern Mixing. While I like the bold colors of that skirt, I think this blue and white version works better with my wardrobe. I’ll likely be listing the other one on Poshmark.

The sandals I’m wearing I’ve had for many years. They’re not much to look at but they are comfortable.  Perhaps that’s why they’ve survived several rounds of closet purges even though I hadn’t been wearing them much. Let’s see if I can change that this summer.

Have you thought to make red, white, and blue your go-to for the upcoming season? How boldly would you embrace a stars and stripes motif in your summer outfit?
