Finishing out March with an update on my style remix challenge and I’m sharing a few of my top fave “whatevers” that I’ve come across this month.

On the outcome of my style remix challenge for March, let me bring you up to speed. The five pieces that I’d chosen for the March Style Remix collection can be seen worn altogether in the Mad As A March Hare post. The idea for this format originates from my recollection of a monthly feature that used to be published in one of my favorite long-since-gone fashion magazines.

In that feature, there would be a selection of garments/accessories, usually 5 or so, that had been deemed key pieces to buy/wear that month. These pieces didn’t necessarily all work with each other nor were they specifically foundational key pieces for a capsule. They tended towards having trending and/or unique details. The articles would also show 5 or so different ways to wear each of the pieces and essentially offer up nearly a month’s worth of looks.

My style remixing plan is somewhat similar. At the beginning of each month, I’m sharing the 5 pieces I’ve selected to be in that month’s style remix collection. The basic formula for a collection is a top, a bottom (e.g. pants, skirt, shorts), footwear, and an outer layer (e.g. jacket, sweater, blazer) which make up the core 4 pieces that could reasonably be combined into a cohesive outfit. A wildcard item will be the 5th piece. It could either be worn with the other 4 pieces (e.g. a coat, vest, or accessory), in substitution (e.g. a dress or a skirt), or it might be a duplicate (e.g. second pair of pants or top).

As this was a style remixing challenge, I’d started with a plan to wear each of the pieces at least 4 more times during the month either on their own or in tandem with others pieces from the collection. Each of the items would appear in the look for at least one other post during the month as well. After all, don’t we all find ourselves wearing a favorite over and over again? Even so, I didn’t reach my goal of 4 additional wears for each item so going forward, I’m adjusting that goal to 3 times.

The style remix collection for March consisted of these four core items; a blazer with a southwestern pattern, a striped button-down shirt, a pair of dark denim jeans, and lug-sole sneakers. The wildcard was a lightweight cardigan with a blue and cream pattern.

The blazer was the first of the pieces I wore on its own and I paired it with a denim shirt, gray sweatpants, and my strapped ballet flats. This blazer also appeared in my Size Denial And A New ‘Fit’ness Plan post and then again in today’s post.

These jeans are among my top faves to wear so I know I wore them more than these three times for which I have photographic proof. In the double-denim look on the left, I didn’t need to roll the cuffs like in the other two looks because I’m wearing heeled shoes.

The striped button-down was also worn more than 3 times but I simply didn’t get around to taking OOTD photos each time. I wore the 3/3 OOTD again later that week for the outfit in Getting To The Bottom Of Things.

I did fall a little short on the times-worn goal for the cardigan. It appeared twice more on the blog but I didn’t wear it any other time. My lug-sole sneakers got a lot of wear on the days we had no rain and were also worn for the 10 On The 10th post with my dark denim jeans.

For today’s look, I paired the blazer with my white maxi dress (see What’s The Story?) that I bought about a year ago. I’ve been so thrilled to see that maxi dresses and skirts are in for Spring/Summer this year because I have a lot of them. See, another example of me being a trendsetter 😉. Rounding out my look is block-heel sandals that I’ve had for 5+ years and an assortment of jewelry that I don’t wear very often.

Now for my “whatever” top faves. I’m using the term “whatever” as an indication that my top faves could come from any number of sources and be related to any number of topics. There could be recipes, life hacks, and social media posts among these “whatevers” or anything else that simply caught my attention sometime during the month that I felt was worthy of passing along. I’ve set no limit as to how many I will share, it’ll just depend on what comes my way.

And lastly, in an attempt to level up my beauty routine, I’ve also been seeking out some new makeup products. I’ve very much liked the idea of lip stains since I first came across them many years ago. A couple of the “drug store” level brands had them for a while but no more. In my struggles to get the results I want, I’ve finally taken the leap up price-wise and have given the ones by Benefit and Stila a try. Both are now among my top faves of lip products.

That puts a wrap on the month. As for my Mad As A March Style Remix Challenge, I’ll give myself a B+. The pieces in the collection worked out very well and overall, I didn’t find the requirement to wear each item a few more times during the month to be limiting but rather sparked my creativity. Where I need to improve is on taking photos of the looks. On Monday, I’ll be sharing my style remix collection for April.

  1. An eclectic bunch of things and some great styling. My fave is the look with the patchwork denim (?) maxi, blazer and boots. Thanks for linking up.

  2. What a fun challenge! I’m excited to see maxi dresses and skirts since I do love them and can’t wait to wear them once our weather warms up.

  3. That is a idea! I should give that a try as I tend to wear my favourites always the same way. Btw Rena, I see ballet flats………..join us!

  4. I like this challenge! I love how you found different ways to wear those items in one month. My April challenge is to wear all of my thrifted items (from Feb/March purchases) at least once as I had bought quite a few things (especially 2 weeks ago when I spent only $7 on 7 pieces!). Then the plan is to go through my least worn spring tops of last year that I know I still love (at least I think I do). So basically it is a shop my closet month before any purchases can be made.

  5. Rena, I think you have the most fun creating different looks from a specific item. You do it in a way that’s so you! I have some clothes that probably owe me money because I wear them just that often…like my favorite pair of Talbots jeans. Thanks for the summary!
