Like so many others this summer, The Husband and I are in the midst of getting ready for a trip that we’ll be taking this month. In preparation for this trip, we’ve been stalking the weather forecasts for the various locations we’ll be visiting.

And as is typical for most forecasts, they have changed from day to day. One day it looks like there’ll be significant chance of rain and then the next, the forecast is showing sunny skies. I don’t want to reveal all of the details of our trip just yet so just say that we’ll be flying to a starting point and then traveling a distance of about 1,500 miles as the crow flies and flying home from that point. Even with the fluctuating forecasts, the temps at the starting point will be 15-20 degrees cooler than at the end.

So what to pack when the weather is uncertain? Pieces that offer a variety of options is my plan of action. I’m not one to travel with just carry-on luggage so it’s not so much a matter of limited space. I do, however, want to be smart about my choices and avoid taking items that I really won’t need nor wear.

My approach will be to lean heavily into layering opportunities. Nothing too heavy or wintery other than one looser fitting chunky V-neck sweater and one creamy toned waffle-knit cardigan. I’m also packing a few button-down shirts that can be worn under a denim jacket (see below) on cooler days or over a tank top on sunnier, warmer days.

Besides the button-down shirt and denim jacket, I’m also wearing the striped tank top you can see in the next set of photos as an extra layer for a cooler day. I’m bringing two lightweight scarves for even more styling options as well as additional protection against potential chilly days.

On sunnier days, I can ditch the outer layer like my denim jacket and switch out my sneakers for sandals. I’ll likely wear my shirt unbuttoned over the tank top which will provide some sun protection as my skin has become a bit sensitive to UV exposure. This is especially so for my décolletage which is why the tank tops that I’ve bought recently feature a high neckline.

Another key item that I’ll be taking along on this trip is the convertible backpack you see in these photos. It’s another example of an item that I originally saw in a retail store and then found listed on Poshmark for a fraction of the price. This trip will be the first time I’m using it and it’ll be my personal item on the plane. There are a few other items that I bought for this trip and other future travels that I’ll share in a future post.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. Today’s featured post from the last link-up, Granny Square Print Midi Dress, was contributed by Emma over at Style Splash. Besides a bold use of colors, Emma has a keen eye for patterns that are fun and exciting. Crocheting is one of my hobbies so I find this granny square print dress simply delightful.

Where are your travels taking you this summer and what’s your approach to planning on what to pack? Do you wear everything you take or do you tend to over pack? If you have any tips, I hope that you’ll share them.

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  1. When we take the vehicle or vehicle and trailer, I pack more than enough because there’s plenty of space, but when we fly, we go carry-on only. That’s when creative packing really come into play. In either case though, layering is the key to packing success.

May you have an awesome Jul 4th and thank you for hosting.
My entries this week = 5+6

  3. I tend to pack items I can wear in different combinations and always layer. I have been known, however, to buy items along the way. We were in San Antonio a few years ago, and I actually had to buy a winter coat because a cold front had come through the area. Comfortable shoes are a must. I hate having to resort to sneakers because I haven’t found the perfect pair that doesn’t scream tourist yet can be worn all day long.

I can’t wait to hear all about your trip…you’ve got me intrigued! I am pretty sure you’re not coming through Indiana because you wouldn’t need layers at all! Thanks for the link party!

Layering sounds like a great solution for the variances in temperature you’ll be dealing with. I’ve just returned from Greece: I knew the weather would be good but my capsule wardrobe wasn’t thought through, and I wasn’t happy with what I took. More on the blog tomorrow.

  5. That can really be a problem. Layering is the key, there’s nothing else to that! Have a great time!

  6. Layering is the order of the day in the UK weather, but easy to under estimate when you need to travel light. Have a wonderful vacation.

  7. Our fall vacation is like that where we need to be prepared for rain and sunny/warm weather and activities that will take us outdoors. I think of fabrics that will dry quickly and a light layer. I actually purchased a rain jacket last year, it’s not for looks but for practicality.

  8. You never know what the weather will be when you reach your destination, even when you’ve been careful to check the forecasts. I think you’re smart to pack layers. Happy travels! Thank you for sharing this post in the Talent-Sharing Tuesdays Link-Up 69.
