Due to the space limitations for my wardrobe storage, twice a year I spend a good portion of a day rotating around my footwear. Up on the higher, less accessible shelves go the “out of season” and least likely to be worn items making room for the seasonally appropriate ones to be in the easier-to-reach locations.

Said footwear rotation was done last Wednesday. You may recall this post from April, Last Week, This Week: The Ol’ Closet Switcheroo, in which I provided details of that last rotation including a description of the closet situation in our bedroom. I also confessed to having quite a large footwear wardrobe which admittedly is a contributing factor in the need for the semi-annual rotations.

The details of this latest rotation will be shared in next week’s link-up post. However, as I was updating my footwear accounting, I pondered briefly on what it might take to inventory the rest of my wardrobe. As a stats nerd, I of course wouldn’t limit myself to just general categories like jackets, skirts, dresses, etc. Each general category would be broken down by more specifics like type (e.g. denim, blazer, bomber) or length (e.g. knee, midi, maxi) or season. The options seem endless and possibly verging on ridiculous. While I’m intrigued by the idea of having such detailed information about my clothing, I’ve not begun this endeavor beyond some cursory counts.

Like, for instance, the number of midi to maxi-length black skirts that I own. I had no idea until I went looking for the items I’d envisioned for the outfit I’m wearing in these photos. You could say that I’d been inspired by Jill’s 3 Easy Outfits With A Black Maxi Skirt to try my hand at coming up with an idea for wearing one of mine. Little did I realize what I would uncover hiding in my closet. Besides this lacy number that I’m wearing (by Chico’s, thrifted), I have three others plus a few knit ones. A thorough review of what’s in my wardrobe is sorely overdue.

And this leads us to this month’s survey. In August, I introduced a new post format which you can read about in this post, Tell Me About Yourself. TL;DR? In a nutshell, once a month I’m seeking out my readers’ opinions via a short survey. It’ll be a different topic each month and the results will be included in a post on a related subject in the following month. Later this week I’ll be sharing the results of last month’s survey regarding Instagram.

The sole purpose of these surveys is to satisfy my personal interest (and perhaps yours). The responses are provided anonymously and I won’t be sharing/selling them to anyone else. I have no intentions of developing any type of marketing tool or online course or selling you anything based on your answers. I’m a mostly left-brained stats-nerd kind of person and I thought it would be cool to be able to include my own researched information in some of the blog posts that I write.

You don’t know how thrilled I am each time the count increases as I monitored each month’s submissions. I do hope that you’ll take a few minutes and complete this month’s survey. (NOW CLOSED)

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. My favorite post from last week’s link-up was Casual Red And Black Outfit by Emma over at Style Splash. This look is full of inspirational ideas of how mixing pieces like a graphic tee, white trainers, and a cozy sweater result in a fun and stylish ensemble.

While we may wish for a neverending closet, they only exist in magical worlds, and often we find ourselves needing to live within our means. And whether that’s in reference to finances or space or both, a good place to start is by taking inventory of what you already have.

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I used to rotate – put away tanks, and bring out long sleeves, put away seasonal stuff after it passed, etc. Now, I just keep it all together. If it doesn’t fit or bring me joy, into the donation box it goes. I guess it helps that I’m in Florida, so I don’t have a huge difference in clothing from season to season.

  2. It’s really my wish that I didn’t have to rotate, but alas my wants are bigger than my real estate, haha!!
You should show all of the black skirts, because maybe you do need them all? LOL

  3. I keep an inventory of everything I own in Excel, and I’ve taken photos of each of my items, so I have a really good idea of what I own at any given time. It makes such a difference!

  4. Fun survey topic! I just rotated my closet and purged several bags of things for Goodwill. Thanks for referencing my post! I’m glad it inspired you! Love the outfit you put together!

  5. I am lucky in that I’ve had large closets in the last house and the new one. But, I used to have to switch out for the seasons which involved going up and down stairs multiple times. I’m afraid to inventory! I know it’s a lot, but I don’t really have repeats of items except for basics like tees and solid cardigans.

  6. I love this cool sassy outfit in all black! That lacy skirt is wonderful. What a great thrifted find! I don’t do a seasonal closet rotation because I can fit almost everything into my closet room. Except my 12 bins of sweaters! They are too bulky and are organized by color and style in bins and stored in the basement. I recently cleaned out all of the things that no longer fit properly but I am in need of a second clean out with a focus on the footwear. That intimidates me! Fun post, my friend!

  7. I love this cool and sassy black outfit, Rena! That lacy skirt is wonderful and such a great thrifted find! I don’t rotate my closet room because almost everything I own fits in there. Except my sweaters and blanket scarves. They are too bulky so I keep my sweaters organized by color and style in bins stored in the basement. I recently cleared out about half of my wardrobe. It was basically everything that no longer fit properly. Now I have to do a second clean out with a focus on the footwear and that just intimidates me…because they all fit and I love all of my shoes! Fun post, my friend!

Such a stylish all black look and such a interesting survey. I’m excited to hear the results. Thanks for the party.

  9. As I switched my wardrobe this weekend, I did another cleanout. It never takes me long as I do that fairly often. I realized this go around that hanging on to things that I made myself wear vs was drawn to and wanted to wear made me shop more. It was a useful observation so several things went into the donation pile.

I tried the long black skirt thing recently. My daughter said, I look like a Faith Baptist Mom….the name of the private christian school she went to. That was not what I was going for, so I’ve ditched the look. 🙂

  11. I switched yesterday my clothes. I never knew I had so many black skirts, lol.

Thanks for hosting the linkup. I’ve joined the survey. Good luck with it Rena. x Jacqui

  14. That is such a great skirt! I’m definitely guilty of having multiples of some items – and I have 2 black maxi skirts actually, but they are both so different! We built our house a couple years back so I got the wardrobe room of my dreams and I finally get to have all my clothing out year-round, so I don’t have to do any switchover with clothing or accessories. It’s perfect, and not wanting to outgrow the space is helping me buy less and hit my 30 wears challenge with more pieces I already own!

Thank you for the link up!

I’m definitely a bit nerdy in this respect. All new items are recorded in a spreadsheet, and everything is displayed by color in the wardrobe. I have a skirt almost exactly the same as yours!

  16. I have to rotate my wardrobe because I just don’t have enough space! Every few months I tidy it up because it tends to get a bit messy, and I probably give things away once or twice a year.
I love that skirt you’re wearing here, Rena. It’s gorgeous!
