I intentionally wrote the title as somethings new, somethings old so as to not confuse my meaning as being wedding-related. And since we’re on the topic of shoes (see last week’s post), it seemed fitting to highlight a recent addition to my collection.

As a fan of secondhand shopping, my outfits are often a mix of somethings new and somethings old. Even if my entire OOTD was bought retail, many of my most adored garments I’ve had for several years. Take for instance my kimono, which made its first appearance on the blog about five years ago in Boho Kimono: Up Down All-Around. In that post, I’d styled the kimono three ways; one for work, one for casual, and the last for dressing it up a bit. Times have changed since then and now I’m all about staying casual as well as comfortable.

My top has also been in my closet for a few years but the jeans are a new-to-me purchase made Monday at a local thrift store. It’s my “clogs meets fisherman” sandals that truly represent team “new” in this look. I picked them up during the shopping outing with my daughter that I mentioned in last week’s post. She also tried them on but opted to get them in the tan colorway which are adorable.

Monday – Friday

The highlights from last week include reporting for jury duty on Monday which turned out to be not much of anything. Instructions on the summons said to call in or check online the previous Friday after 6pm for specifics as to whether I would need to report in person or be on call. On the website, my group number was instructed to report in person on Monday at 1pm. I was up early to finish my blog post, had breakfast, got dressed (business casual as suggested), and was entering the courthouse at 12:45pm. The wait for the security screening was about 5 minutes and I was so proud of myself for getting there with a few minutes to spare.

The jury services room was just a short walk down the hall from the main entrance. There, I was greeted by a woman who directed me to head down the hall to my right, make a left at the end, and then another left. At the end of that hall (I’m now at the rear door of the jury room), I was instructed to follow along in the aisles between rows of chairs (which were empty) and see the woman standing somewhat in the center of the room. That woman tells me that they’d just received last-minute notice that jury services weren’t required for the afternoon and since there had been not enough time to notify me not to report in, I would still get credit for jury duty. One and done.

I’d been all set for a long afternoon of waiting around and now I wasn’t quite sure about what to do. I did have the wherewithal to take a selfie and then I went to the market. After that, I managed to get in a quick shop at my nearby Goodwill.

On Tuesday as well as Wednesday, I ran a bunch of miscellaneous errands. “Miscellaneous errands” may or may not be code for shopping but who’s to say, really? The culottes in my Tuesday OOTD are another the new-to-me finds from my Monday stop at Goodwill and the rest of the items I’ve had 3-4 years. The items in the double-denim look for Wednesday are all secondhand except the booties. The distressed details on my jacket are the result of a DIY project that I wrote about in a Magnificent 8 Collaboration post back in October 2018.

Nothing much to share regarding my Thursday activities (or OOTD) but on Friday, The Husband and I went to be with friends for Passover Seder. Our friends Keith and Linda have a lovely home and the decor is primarily black and white so I dressed accordingly. In the closing segment of SNL this past weekend, one of the cast regulars was wearing these same pants (seen previously in Are We Being Ignored Or Just Bad For Business?) as well as the matching top.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. My featured blogger from last week’s link-up is Mica, the Aussie mum who shares her a love for bargains and handbags on her blog Away From The Blue.

I’ve found that the personal styles I admire the most are when the person is mixing new and old favorites as well as blending secondhand items with retail purchases. Are you a fan of a “somethings new, somethings old” approach to fashion as well?

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

This is the way I like to dress too! It makes me feel good about my shopping habits if I am not wearing all new and if I am remixing things I have had for a while. I did get rid of 2 pairs of sandals today because they had no support and I guess my feet can’t handle that anymore as my foot tendon let me know last Friday (so I did order a pair at Target to replace one). I just looked at my monthly budget and really feel like I should be saving lots each month (thinking of new van so want revamp my spending habits). Really want to shift to thrifting more as I told myself I would at the beginning of the year!

  2. Thank you so much for the feature! I like your outfit too, as you can see from the featured outfit I do love a classic kimono and denim combo! 🙂 Sounds like you had a nice relaxing week too! Being able to get credit for doing jury duty even though you weren’t needed is awesome! I’ve been asked to do it a few times but it hasn’t been possible due to important deadlines at work. I’m sure it’s got to come around again soon for me. Although it makes me laugh that I’ve been asked 3 times and my husband has only been asked once, haha! 🙂

I find mixing old and new is a staple in my outfit creating too. It’s good when you get a new piece or pieces that work so well with older pieces you already have and that inspire you to come up with a bunch of new outfits in your wardrobe 🙂

    Thanks for the link up!

  3. All of your outfits look creative and thoughtfully curated — I’m seeing a range from sophisticated-business-casual to edgy to boho. What fun! My favorite is the black & white outfit with the geometric-print pants and the black vest.
    Thanks for hosting the link-up.

  4. I’m with Carol, here, the black and white outfit is my fave, too. Mixing old and new, it just feels so right. And creates more originality, too.

Hi! Haven’t dropped by in awhile and I miss this place with all your fun posts and great styling! Love that you’ve mixed the old and new- I find that’s what makes a look all the better. It keeps the style updated with a touch of originality that makes for some interesting looks. I giggled when on your free rest of the afternoon you popped into Goodwill -because at any point that I might have some bit of time to spare, that’s where I’m usually headed: the thrift store lol! And I simply ADORE those black and white pants. Have a great week my friend xx

  6. I definitely mix old and new. When I started blogging last July, my daughter actually told me I’d probably need to shop more! That hasn’t happened…I already shopped a lot! But, I instinctively buy new items to go with things already in my closet. I’ve kind of always gone with that “it needs to go with at least three things already in your closet” idea. There are times I don’t use that, but it has to be something really special. Thanks for the link party!

  7. Wednesday’s outfit…you do double denim like a pro! I am definitely on board with mixing old and new, retail and secondhand in my outfits. Today I’m wearing retail top, pants, and shoes; thrifted scarf; gifted pendant; and handmade jewelry (including some upcycled magazine/catalog paper beads).

  8. I’m definitely a somethings old somethings new dresser, though there tends to be more somethings old than somethings new in my wardrobe. I love thrift store shopping!

    • Whether retail or thrifted it comes into the closet as new and injects new life to the whole. Some great easywear looks today Rena.

  9. I love mixing it up too, Rena! Reading your post made me want to go out for a thrift shopping day! Perhaps I’ll do that next week some time? I love how you chose to style your outfit to match your friend’s home!! That really made me smile!
Love those clogs, by the way!
    Hugs

  10. Jury duty heaven! Last time I had it, I reported to duty and sat there for about 20 minutes before they released us all. Music to my ears!
I like a mix of old and new when possible. Thanks for the link up!

Disappointing to miss out on jury service but at least you had time for “miscellaneous errands” (I like this). I like mixing old with new; I look forward to getting more skilled at thrift shopping when I have more time to browse.

  12. That’s the best way to combine I think. I can’t wait to shop in a second hand shop again in stead of only online. Thanks for hosting.

Thanks so much for hosting!! I shared posts from both my blogs – now off to check out some other posts. Have a great weekend.

  14. Oh my goodness, Rena, I missed your post again last week! I don’t know why I can’t get it right! I love this outfit. Those shoes are fabulous and you know how I feel about kimonos! Super cute look!

  15. I am a little late! I have been buying mainly outlet ( mango) and Poshmark as of late, and do enjoy thrift shopping. It takes time, but it is fun. Love the varied styles and those printed pants on you as well as your new clogs! Fun your daughter got hers in tan.
    Have a lovely week!
