Akin to a lightweight maxi-skirt as an easy-to-wear summer option is wide-leg linen pants. With their looser fit and breathable fabric, they can be called into use if plans call for dressing up a bit or just hanging out at home.

Whether it’s a dusted-off treasure from years past, or an item that was bought from a thrift store, or perhaps a well-worn favorite that’s been given new life, that fashion find is covered under the Reclaim-Recycle-Reuse theme. While these wide-leg linen pants are the only thrift store find in this look, a couple of the other pieces I’ve had for a number of years, and yet they’ve not been worn much recently.

At the end of last month, after I had published Thrift Store Finds & OOTDs: May 2021, I got a chance to visit a couple of the thrift stores in my old haunt. I’ve found some really great things at one of them in particular. The other finds will be included in my June post but since I’ve been wearing these pants on repeat already, I was eager to share them in their own post.

Although I’ve referred to them as linen, these wide-leg pants are actually a linen/rayon blend which makes them much less prone to wrinkle (yay!). The brand is A New Day (very similar to these that are currently available). Q1/20 is the date on the label so the ones I have were likely selling in the store about a year ago. Mine is also a pull-on style but with an elastic waistband only in the back plus a drawstring tie. Without the elastic in the front, some of the fullness comes from the single pleats on each side. Unfortunately, none of these details were captured in photos.

My sandals were a retail purchase from a few years ago. With each seasonal closet rotation since I’ve given thought as to whether I should keep them or not. I adore the nod toward the gladiator-style and back zipper which makes them a great option for wearing with long pants. The hem of my pants getting caught up between my heel and my footwear is something I really dislike. I typically avoid pairing up long pants with my open-back shoes like mules and slingbacks.

Back to my sandals, they fit great but at first, the straps were a bit stiff and a little rough due to braiding. Despite that, the straps hold my feet well and camouflage that I basically have no arches. Also, I like the visual lift I get from the low wedge heel. Over time though, the straps have gotten softer and more comfortable to wear so these sandals are definitely a keeper now.

Once again I’ve opted for a mix of patterns and this time, it’s stripes with a tropical print. Yes, you read that right … another tropical print. Which is ideal as a summer motif, don’t you agree? Anyway, this top dates back to Summer 2015 according to the date on the label. Although I’ve got no photos of me wearing it, I know that I did at least once or twice after I bought it. And there’s this wearing so far in 2021.

My necklace is another item that I’ve had for many years although I don’t recall where or when I bought it. The smaller dark beads are a brown wood tone but I think that I might try painting them black which would fit better with most of my wardrobe. Finishing the look is a very lightweight utility jacket. To be shared on Instagram are these pants styled with a plain black top and a denim jacket as well as a look with a graphic tee and my black/white striped jacket.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link-up. My featured blogger from last week is Sally, who shares her inspirations for plus-size fashion and her fondness for rabbits on her blog Within A World Of My Own.

I know that I’ll be wearing my wide-leg linen pants at least once a week and probably well into Fall. Have you figured out your go-to clothing choices for Summer yet? What’s your opinion on thrift store and resell shopping?  Does the idea of wearing someone else’s old clothes give you the heebie-jeebies?  Is buying secondhand just a passing trend for those who can afford more or is it a smart way to live “greener” and reduce one’s carbon footprint?

Stay well and let’s keep in touch! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, pin … all options are available. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Claire, I’m glad you like the look. It was indeed the pinstripes that sold me on the pants and because of the wide-leg, there is no V pattern recreated in the side seams which can be a bit unflattering to a wider hipped gal like myself.

  1. Those wide leg pants are such a great find! Bonus that they have a little rayon in them so they don’t wrinkle! Love the stripes and floral pattern mix!

Jill, I’m so happy that you like the pattern mixing I did. The top was a last-minute selection as I was getting dress for the photoshoot and I couldn’t be more pleased at how well it turned out.

I love linen pants- but even more when there’s a fibre blend like yours! The creasing otherwise drives me nuts! Like you a great wide leg pants for the summer is a great alternative to te maxi and I love that so much. And those little strappy sandals are also adorable! Have a great weekend xx

Lucy, I typically do a winkle test where I grab a handful of the fabric and squeeze it for about a minute to see how badly the material creases in such a short time. Many garments have been passed over that didn’t pass muster.

  3. You really put a nice fake pantsuit together that looks posh casual and summery. The mix of stripes and floral looks great. The stripes make you look tall and the clinched at the waist jacket creates a great shilouette. Can one dress better than this. Great look!

Thank you, Nicole. I hadn’t realized that the look could pass as a casual separates suit but considering that, I probably would have worn this look at the office when I was still working.

Those pants are such a great find I can see why you have been wearing them a lot! it’s a fun print mix with the printed top too 🙂

I thrift a lot – it’s a good way to be more eco friendly when spending on fashion, and I like that it gives old clothes a new life. I’ve found quite a few new with tags pieces when thrifting too, the opshops round here can have some real surprises!

    Thanks for the link up!

Hope you’re having a nice weekend, it’s another cold wintery one here.

  5. Wide legged pants are SO trendy right now and stripes are so versatile, you’ll get a lot of wear out of these pants. I agree that they’re also great in the summer with the loser fit and aren’t as hot/clingy!

Carrie, absolutely. Fortunately, the climate in my area is usually quite mild in the summer but these pants are still very versatile.

  6. I just bought a linen skirt, my first linen item. It feels extreme cool, like cotton. Never thought I would like it, because of the wrinkles. Have a great Sunday.

    • Rena

Nancy, winkles can be an issue but that is the nature of linen. Sometimes you just need to embrace it.

Marie, thank you for taking the time to read my post and for the lovely compliments.

i’ve been wearing a lot of dresses this past month. I also bought a pair of denim bermuda shorts last week that I can tell will be on repeat once a week. My mom just hemmed my other striped pair of wide legged pants so I think I will wear those again more now.

Mireille, I’ve bought a few dresses myself lately which is new for me. As a rule, I usually prefer skirts but being open to new ideas is a good thing.

Rena, I love this look! wide legged trousers are so great for the warm weather. I just picked up 4 new pairs that are all 100% cotton and I freaking love them! This combination of stripes and florals is so pretty, my friend! And you know I love shopping second hand. It does sometimes give me the heebies, but that’s what washing machines are for!

Shelbee, I’ve come across (and bought) several items that make me wonder why they were donated by the previous owner. Sometimes it’s not until I wear the garment that I find out why it had been tossed in a purge. Oh well, live and learn.

  9. That print mix is perfection, and I love the wide legged pants + sandals combination. And thanks for the shout-out!

    • Rena

Sally, you are most welcome, and thank you for becoming a reader of my blog.

  10. I adore these wonderful striped linen-blend trousers, Rena! The black and white stripes really make them versatile, I’ll bet. I hope they have pockets!

I vary up my summer clothes – lots of dresses for that “one and done” easy dressing, and I have a few pairs of loose wde-legged pants, but big swooshy skirts are usually my go-to.

Thanks so much for the link-party!

    • Rena

Sheila, these pants do indeed have pockets … deep roomy ones. I’m also a huge fan of big swooshy skirts, no matter the season.

    • Rena

Lauren, they are a great option for warmer weather no matter what you’ll be doing.

    • Rena

Lovely, I’m glad that you like the look and thank you for the compliments.

  11. Rena, I would wear this entire outfit! I love it all. I’m a huge fan of wide legged trousers, particularly in the summer months as I find them to be so comfortable. I also hate it when my trousers keep catching the back of my sandals!
    Hugs
    Suzy xx

    • Rena

Suzy, the hem of my trousers catching in my sandals is a huge annoyance for me and I think is looks sloppy. I’m so happy that you like this look and you are also a fan of wide-leg trousers.

    • Rena

How kind of you to leave such a lovely compliment. Thank you for stopping by.

    • Rena

Celyn, thank you. Did you see the shout-out for your blog a couple of weeks ago?
