The phrase “black and tan” usually refers to a drink made by mixing dark and light beers and while this post has nothing to do with drinking, this color combo is as classic as that liquid refreshment. My inspiration for this combo came from the tote that I’m carrying which was one of the giveaways I got two weeks ago at Fierce 50 Revolution meet up. Typically, beach themed color combos might include blue instead of black but I think that black can work just as well.

Dress – Apt 9 (exact, and in other colors)
Flyaway cardigan – Calvin Kline, old (similar look, another option)
Tote – Chico’s (nearly identical)

The chevron like striping pattern has a slenderizing effect as does the shark bite hem (yet another one that I’ve added to my collection).  The diagonal pattern is repeated in the cardigan and the natural fiber like appearance of the yarn plays up on the casual, beachy theme.

Necklace – Chico’s, no longer available (similar look, another option)

I bought this necklace a few weeks ago after I’d received an email from Chico’s advertising a clearance sale on jewelry where most items were $9.99. I hopped on-line and wound up buying this necklace as well as four others and a pair of earrings. More to come on those items in future posts.

Sandals – Candies, old (similar look, another option)

These jute-wrapped wedge sandals have been in my closet for a number of years and they’ve become like a timeless classic for when I’m going for a more laid back look. I could swap them out for a pair of black sandals if I was wearing this dress for a fancier occasion.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Now, onto the Fine-Whatever link up for this week. The featured contributor for last week’s link up is Jodie from Jodie’s Touch of Style. I had the good fortune to meet her in person, as well as many other fabulous ladies, at the Fierce 50 Revolution meet-up that I reference above. Jodie has done a marvelous write up of this memory filled weekend in her post. I’ll be publishing mine next week.

How often does a color combination bring to mind an unrelated subject? Does black and tan work as a beach inspired motif? What inspires your color choices?

You’re not imagining things if you’re thinking that this week’s post is a bit brief. I’ve had quite a bit to do in preparation for the big event this week (click to see Monday’s post if you missed it). I’m planning to keep up with my usual posting schedule and I hope that you’ll be watching for them.

Let’s connect! Subscribe, tweet, follow, friend, love, pin … all options are available and waiting for you. I look forward to hearing from you. And don’t forget to add a post or two to the link up.

  1. Is This Mutton?

That’s a nice color combo, relaxed and elegant. The wedges and bag add timeless elegance to the chevron dress.

  2. i would have never thought to take the bag, and create an outfit around it—that’s perfect, Rena!!!
I’ve come to love these shark bite dresses, because they are longer, but you can still walk in them pretty easy!!!

This is one of my favorites Rena! There’s a great feeling of texture here that I like a lot. I also think these colors/neutrals work well with your hair and skin tone. Something about this outfit has a sassy summer sophistication! I’ll bet you got lots of compliments on it.
You certainly did a lot of advance preparation to keep your blog running at a normal pace. You’re an impressive woman in so many ways Rena.
I hope each day finds you a bit more “healed”. Jodie Filogamo has been keeping me updated since I don’t do Facebook or Instagram. TV through the toes can get old quickly…but you need the time to rest and regroup. I’m sending healing thoughts and love dear Rena.

  7. That’s a beautiful combo, Rena! I love all of the accessories!

Thanks for the linkup & I hope that you are feeling a bit better each day!

  8. My favorite way of wearing Black and Tan? LEOPARD!

I’m linking up an outfit with mustard yellow — apparently the “hot” color of the summer. I chose it from a “highly” scientific method using the Likemeter app, which quantified my IG Likes from last week. This outfit had the most for that time period. Was it the mustard? Heehee.

Hope you’re making progress in your recovery. Are you doing that PT of “spiders walking up the walls”?

  9. I hope your recovery is going well, Rena, and you’re feeling stronger every day (you’re already amazingly strong). You look fab in these colors and I adore the tote bag. Thanks for linking up, xox

  10. I like black and tan combo, Rena. Everyone does black and white and yours is out of the box. The print on the dress is really nice and I like an uneven hem effect. You put all the elements very nicely, great outfit.

  11. I can’t wait to read Jodie’s post about your meet up. It sounds like it was so much fun.
P.S. I love your dress and the fly-away cardigan. It looks perfect together!
