Tweed Jacket: Up Down All-Around

The tweed jacket is a popular feature in the wardrobes of both men and women as are other tweed articles. Tweed commonly refers to a variety of wool fabrics that are woven in a rough, multi-colored twill structure and come in a variety of color palettes and patterns. Some gals love their stripes and animal prints but after florals, I think that tweed is the most common pattern in my wardrobe.

Although its origins are from Scotland and Ireland where the weather is much colder, modern day tweed is a versatile textile and is used in a variety of styles. Cut and color can transform this often masculine looking material into a decidedly feminine piece. No plain Jane, the tweed jacket is as suitable for play or fun and it is for work.

Dressed Up For Work

In Up Down All-Around, I usually share my work look first so that is what you see below. I adore the look of a tweed jacket with boots but I could also have opted for my black t-strap pumps.

The jacket is made by Coldwater Creek and I bought it at a thrift store during the three-day shopping spree I wrote about in Thrifting Overload. It’s cropped length fits and flatters my figure better than a longer one would and the mix of colors in the pattern provide so many color pairing opportunities. For this work look, I’ve got on my black Old Navy basic swing dress along with tights and boots which make for an ‘easy-peasy’ outfit.

Dressed Down For Play

A tweed jacket can give a bit of polish to an other wise very casual outfit of a white button-down shirt and skinny pants. While this look would be fine with jeans, I wanted to play up on the plumy tones of the tweed so I paired it with the mid-rise skinny pants I featured in Color My World: Crimson And Burgundy. The white boyfriend style shirt helps to brighten the outfit and I love that the jacket is not long enough to cover it completely.

Play time is all about being on the go so these pewter multi-tone loafers are my go-to choice for all day comfort.

Dressed For Fun

For all-around fun, I’m imagining an upcoming holiday party for which a combination of tweed and velvet would strike just the right note. The inspiration for this look came partly from a recent post by Jess, at Elegantly Dressed and Stylish, where she showed a tweed skirt and velvet jacket combo.

Like Jess, I’m a huge fan of velvet and it’s pairing with tweed seems so perfect but I didn’t stop there. I bumped it up another level and added lace. This makes for a whole lot of patterns and textures but my lace top is not frothy and frilly so I think it works and makes the outfit definitely party-ready. The lace top and velvet skirt have been in my wardrobe for several years so I can’t link to the exact item but I have a few options for you in the next section. For a bit of holiday spirit, on one lapel I’ve got on two of my sparkly snowflake pins that I’ve had for many years and on the other lapel is a fairly new wreath shaped one.

For my footwear, I almost went with my gray shoeties (seen last week in Powers The Flower: Abstract Floral) but I like how these sandals pick up on the berry tones in the tweed jacket.

The one caution I will offer regarding a tweed jacket is that you need to be aware of fabric content and the structure of the pattern. A material that is too stiff or has a texture that is too large tends to look like upholstory fabric which will likely look cheap and not be flattering. Otherwise, style options abound for this time tested textile (say that five times fast). So tell me, how do you tweed?

    LOVE LOVE LOVE, Rena 🙂 tweed is one of my ultimate, favouritest fabrics in the entire planet. It’s so ladylike and classy but equally easy to infuse punk, and sass, and a touch of rock n roll. Just look at Karl Lagerfeld!! I love pairing my tweed blazers with a silk shirt and leather pants, and preen about as though I’m a retired rockstar MUACK

    I used to wear tweed a lot in my younger working days and I should have kept one of my blazers as it would be great to wear with jeans and boots today. It’s a great look for you!
