My inspiration for this month’s Color My World color combo of moss, black, and poppy comes from the Color Crash Course section of the September issue of InStyle Magazine.  Anyone else also get a bit giddy over the mega fashion issues that so many magazines publish as an upcoming season nears?  They remind me of the days before the internet and the excitement stirred by the release of a new Penney’s catalog or getting the monthly Nordstrom’s brochure in the mail. I would spend hours going over all of the styles.

I love sections like this one because they are more likely to show real life clothing and fashions as opposed to the more stylized features. The Color Crash Course section is one of my favorites. When the September issue came in the mail last week, I immediately turned to it hoping I would find inspiration for my post. I was not disappointed. The magazine describes the combination of moss, black, and poppy as “muted green meets vibrant red in a mix that’s balanced yet dynamic, and as elemental as earth and fire”.

As you can see from the photo of the pages from the magazine, most of the fashions are for cooler weather but I hadn’t wanted to do a Fall fashion feature yet so I thought I would show this color combo for warm weather as well. Except for one item (my blogaversary present red shoes), all of what I’m wearing in the following two looks I already had in my closet. In fact, it took considerable restraint to not show more that just these two looks but I do want to point out a fashion forward moment in this post from May where I’m wearing moss, black, and poppy.

In this first look, I matched up my cargo jacket with my red skirt, black marl top, and moss sandals. Black boots would also be a good choice for this outfit but Fall is still pretty warm here in So Cal so sandals help keep the outfit from looking too heavy.

For warmer late summer days, I’m pairing up a black peplum top with my moss green chinos (seen many times before) and my new red lace-ups. In fact, I will be wearing this outfit today at lunch when I meet up with a woman I’ve known since high school but haven’t seen in person since 1989.

I bought this necklace at Macy’s many years ago. Actually, I bought two of them, one as a holiday gift for a colleague at work and the other as a gift for myself. The green in it is a faux suede fabric.

I’ve never seen the H&M magazine so I should check it out. The red shoes are pretty great and I’m glad you like the color combo. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Rena, I love fashion magazines and probably spend way too much money on them! I forgot about the September issues being big, fabulous issues! Thanks for the reminder. I will be picking up some new ones this week, I’m sure! I am loving this color combo of moss, black, and poppy. I really like both outfits you have styled here, but the second one is definitely right up my style alley! I may be copying that look soon. Thanks for the inspiration and the link up!

The September issues are fabulous, aren’t they Shelbee? I usually read them at the nail shop but I may buy one or two this year so I don’t miss out. I’m looking forward to seeing your spin on this style inspiration.

I just picked up a few September issues this week and I feel like a little kid when I find myself oohing and aahing over all the pretty pictures!

Thanks so much for linking up with me On the Edge of the Week! I hope to see you again next week. Have a marvelous weekend!

I haven’t seen any other Sept issues yet but the weekend has just started so I’m definitely planning some ‘reading’ and ‘ooh, aah’ time.

    • Rena

You’re welcome, Laurie. I’ glad you like the color combo and my spins on using it.

Red does add a certain dynamic to the color combo, don’t you think? Thanks for commenting, Jaymie.

  2. Love these colors. I plan on wearing something similar , with olive and red. Olive is such a great neutral. Pretty bucket bag too!

Olive and red are a great pairing and then with black in the mix, it’s a whole other kind of party. I’m looking forward to seeing your spin on using these colors.

  3. Great color combo! I didn’t renew my magazine subscriptions because I never really looked at them, but I do love the big September issues! Glad you found some real life inspiration! And thanks for sharing it with us!

The red pencil skirt is fabulous, and you’ll be able to wear the outfit with little tweaks well into fall in California…

Thanks for the link up! Have a fabulous weekend!

I’ve thinned down on my subscriptions and I reviewing my current ones to see which I will renew but I keeping InStyle. Like with other bold fashion elements, I was a bit timid on the red skirt at first but I love it now and I wear it year round.

  4. I am in the same boat. As much as Pinterest has made it easier for us to get fashion inspirations from, I still can’t live without my magazines. I have 4 in my nightstand waiting for the “free” moment. Love both of your looks… specially those red laceup flats 😉
    Thank you featuring me!!

You’re welcome, Melissa, and I probably have the same stack on my nightstand. There was a time I would get cast off magazines from my mother as well so my waiting-to-be-read pile was constantly growing. I’m glad you like my looks and my new red shoes.

  5. You have created some great looks from those magazine pages and your closet. Such great pieces to transition into Fall.

    • Rena

Thank you, Colleen, for commenting and the lovely compliments.

That section of Instyle is one of my faves too!!
This is definitely a fall color combination —but I really like how you made it look great for the warmer weather!!

Jodie, I often pull out those pages to keep after I’m done with the magazine. I’m glad you like my looks with this color combo.

    • Rena

The red shoes are cool, aren’t they? And I’m glad to find others who like the old school approach prefer having a magazine in hand rather than looking at images on a computer or tablet screen.

  7. This is a really interesting colour combo and it works surprisingly well! I love both of your looks. And I really need a pair of red lace-ups now. I always love the new season style issues in fashion magazines. So fun to get new inspiration.

    • Rena

Thank you, Christina. The color combo is a bit unusual but I think that’s why it works so well, don’t you agree?

    • Rena

Anna, you’re right and perhaps great minds think alike. Strong colors are great as an accent and even better as a featured item. As I said in the post, I held back on showing more looks but I could’ve shown one with a red jacket that I have as well as a red purse.

    • Rena

Thank you, Rachel. The color combo seems to be a hit, and since it was inspired by a magazine feature, I thought the post was quite appropriate to your link up.

    • Rena

You’re never too late to link in my book, Jacqueline, unless the link up has closed. I’m glad you like the color combo and maybe we’ll see you in it soon, too. Thanks for stopping by.

  8. What a great color combination! Red always makes any outfit pop!

I agree, Nina. Red is a great color for extra pop in an outfit.

  9. I love this color combination. What fun too to scope through Instyle and get some color inspiration for fall. Love the olive and poppy combination on you. !

Thank you, Jess. I love the combo too and I hope it sticks around. Sometimes the colors and styles in the early Fall issues don’t stay popular for very long.

  10. nikkifrankhamilton

I really love this color combination on you! And I must say that I am swooning over your footwear choices. You and I have the same taste, but you push it a bit more, and I love it!

    • Rena

Thank you, Nikki. I keep seeing combos of moss, black, and poppy in my closet and I can’t wait for cooler weather to wear them.
